NIGERIA POLICE: WORSE THAN WOES (2)

This is because in Lagos, if a landed property is acquired and building process is set on motion, aside the financial civic responsibility paid into the government coffers, some untouchable enjoyers of impunity – the omo-oniles - MUST equally have their pockets illegally filled up, else, work will know no progress on the site.

A couple of hours into the scenario, the police station in the jurisdiction was visited to relay all that happened. That was done only to fulfil all righteousness, as it was believed that those miscreants sometimes worked in unison with the police. Bearing that in mind, the imam had to put a call across to muslims far and near to be battle-ready in case the enemies of Allah would roll as roared.
A deal was sealed with the patrol team of the police that they be on ground to thwart any violence. The next morning, able-bodied, energetic, heavenly soldiers of Allah had gathered as instructed by the imam. The intent wasn’t to launch any attack but to defend the house of Allah if attacked by the threat-makers and the police found a sell-out. Islam is a religion of peace. And it is indeed a part of peace to prevent what may tear the peace into pieces.
Representative of the police called the imam. “We are getting prepared. We will be there soon. But alfa, my oga say your money na #50,000 ooo,” he said. “What! But it’s just a mosque na! Where do you expect us to get that kind of money from? The omo-oniles did not even request half of that,” replied the imam. “Na wetin my oga talk be that ooo,” said the officer reemphasising the amount charged. “We will get back to you, sir,” the imam said.
That is Nigeria police! They cannot be trusted. They say they are friends of the masses, but they are foes to them. In fact, they are worse than woes. Nothing is free with the police. With money, one can get away with anything with them. But without money, you’ve got no way, even where the passage is wide enough to sail an elephant. I have never encountered people who are as shameless and ignominious as the Nigeria police officers.
I have tried not to be pessimistic. But I have got no sign to raise the optimism. To reform the Nigeria police may be in another millennium. The bad eggs seem to have largely and conqueringly outweighed the good ones. Nigeria police officers are vampirous than vampires, calamitous than calamities, and of course, they are worse than woes.
